The indigenous peoples of Mexico are communities that assume an ethnic identity based on their culture, institutions and history that defines them as indigenous peoples of the country, descendants of Mesoamerican societies. The Mexican State recognizes indigenous people by defining itself in its Constitution as a multicultural nation founded on its indigenous peoples. According to a calculation by the National Indigenous Institute (INI), National Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI), the indigenous population of Mexico in 2012 was about 15 million people spread over 56 ethnic groups.

The mission of this project is to add and improve profiles of Pueblos Indígenas de México. Project members take primary responsibility for relevant profiles or family groups and work on merging duplicates, cleaning up profiles, adding sources, removing incorrect information and offer research assistance as needed.
